Somalia: SSC Human Rights Monitor

The Northern Somalia Unionist Movement (NSUM) is hereby publicising for the benefit of the general public, international organisations dealing with human right and concerned governments the establishment of a human rights organisation in the regions of Sool, Sanaag and Cayn (SSC) of Somalia, effectively from this date, 15 February 2011. The organisation, whose name will be the SSC Human Rights Monitor, will be headed by Dr. Jama Hassan Khalif who has been active in the affairs of these regions and Somalia since the collapse of the Somali State in 1991.
The SSC Human Rights Monitor will be an independent body defending human rights in the SSC regions. The need for this organisation has become increasingly essential since the secessionists based in Hargeisa in the north had invaded and occupied large parts of SSC regions in October 2007 and adopted the violation of the human rights of the occupied people as part of their occupation policy aimed at breaking the resistance of the unionist SSC people.
The presence of SSC Human Rights Monitor in the occupied SSC will serve as eyes and ears to witness the daily abuses of human rights in these regions. For this reason, the secessionist occupiers, like other invaders and occupiers, are unlikely to welcome SSC Human Rights Monitor and their midst and will endeavour to place all sorts of hurdles in its way. Such impediments however will not deter the organisation who, relying on the support of their occupied people, will be able to circumvent obstacles and to report on the occupiers’ daily, weekly and monthly violations of human rights.
The SSC Human Rights Monitor reports on the human rights abuses committed by the occupation militia from the secessionist enclave will be regularly provided to human rights defenders, be they the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, or international and regional NGOs dealing with human rights. The organisation will attend as an observer all regional and international conferences, meetings and seminars on human rights whenever possible and present the human rights situation in the occupied SSC regions of Somalia.
The SSC people at home and abroad in the diaspora are requested to provide full support to this body and in particular the financial wherewithal it needs to fulfil its mission. The same message is directed towards UN agencies and human rights organisations and the wider international community the presence of SSC Human Rights Monitor in the occupied SSC who be eyes and ears to their daily abuses of human rights.
